Love Your Obstacles

This month has been about obstacles in my world. That doesn’t really sound overly inspirational, does it? Alas, it is. Why? Obstacles present opportunities… For growth, change and achievement. I’ve faced a few different types of obstacles in my time and I am certain you have too – in fact, I’d love to hear what tricky tricks your obstacles have pulled on you!

The reason I’ve decided to start with obstacles is because people often come to me with “I CAN’T” or “I COULD, BUT…” This is a BUT FREE ZONE. So let’s be real about obstacles. I believe in inspiring you to achieve fulfilling work and a fulfilling life. You have brilliance within you. You have passion, ideas, talent, it’s all there just waiting to burst out. Personally I find that when I’m mapping out a journey, some obstacles are obvious, and in my face. It’s usually these obstacles that prevent people from embarking on the journey in the first place. This is the “I CAN’T” of which I speak. What does “I CAN’T” look like? It depends on the individual but generally it’s along the lines of, “I don’t have time”, “I’m overwhelmed”, “I’m not important” (read: you are important), “I can’t afford it”, “I’m afraid”, “I’ve tried before and failed”, “I have no idea what to do”, "I've never done this before", “I don’t believe this will work” (which really means, you don’t believe in yourself). I have heard it all. Let me reassure you: your future is calling. You have the power to make change, to define your vision, to overcome your obstacles and to take action in a way that is meaningful for you. You can make the time, you can save the money, you can make this happen if you really want to. And let’s be clear, you are worth it.

Some obstacles are less obvious. They need to be unearthed like carrots along the way and then just when I think I’m in the clearing, I realise there’s more of those little suckers in invisible cloaks, just waiting for the opportune time to pounce. It happens to the best of us. I discovered some invisible cloaks this month that really took me by surprise and this got me thinking. What obstacles are preventing people from taking steps toward their vision, from becoming the person they want to be or living the life they want to live? It then occurred to me - what wouldn’t I have achieved in my life if I let my obstacles win? It’s rather a sober thought to consider what I wouldn’t have achieved. My future has been calling the entire time and I listened. What if I had chosen not to? Think about everything you wouldn’t have achieved if you didn’t tackle your obstacles?! It’s pretty safe to say, I wouldn’t be the person I am today without my obstacles and for that I love them (as painful as they can be sometimes!)

Obstacles are great teachers; they can give us insight and grow our minds. When you think about it, being human is pretty amazing. Our ability to understand and learn from our internal and external existence is quite inspirational – if you are open to it. I’m not here to pretend that there won’t be challenges… There will, there always is and it’s about developing the tools and strategies you need to deal with them. Why am I telling you this? I decided to live a life with no regrets and empower people to make the change they want. That’s my choice. What’s your choice? Next time you find yourself sitting there saying, “I CAN’T”, instead ask yourself, “how can I?”

I'd love to inspiration share and hear about what your obstacles have taught you?
